“Nurses as Catalysts for a Greener Future: Revolutionizing Healthcare for Planetary Health”

Welcome to the ESNO Hackathon 2025, where nurse specialists from across Europe come together under the theme: “Green Future, Health Workplace: Nurse Specialist Leading the Way!” This event is more than a meeting of minds—it’s a call to action for those at the heart of healthcare to drive forward-thinking solutions for one of the most pressing challenges of our time: environmental sustainability.

As we gather for the ESNO congress, we recognize that healthcare, though essential, is a major contributor to environmental waste and pollution. From the energy used to power hospitals to the single-use plastics in our daily practice, the health sector is part of the global environmental crisis. Yet, within this challenge lies an incredible opportunity. Nurses, as trusted leaders and innovators in health, are uniquely positioned to steer the industry towards greener, more sustainable practices.

Throughout this hackathon prior the big congress, we will explore how nurses can lead the transformation of healthcare into a climate-smart, resource-efficient sector. With themes ranging from reducing pharmaceutical waste to advocating for zero-waste hospitals, this event is designed to inspire collaboration, ignite creativity, and spark actionable change. Each theme is led by our own ESNO members and Associates, ensuring that we leverage the expertise and experience of those who know the challenges and opportunities firsthand.

By the end of this hackathon, our goal is to craft Strategies and innovations in a report, that will not only reshape nursing practice but will also contribute to the global fight for a sustainable future. This report will be presented to the European commission and politicians. Together, we can ensure that the health sector becomes a leader in environmental stewardship, setting the standard for industries around the world.
